Some compliments stay with you. The kind that don’t just describe what you do but tell you who you are. A community member once said something to Abby Duran that landed exactly that way. “You’re the mosaic of all the stories you’ve helped to tell.” It’s the line she comes back to when she’s trying to explain her work, because in many ways, it is the work.
As the founder and creative director of VeraNation Writing, Abby helps people, brands, and creatives find their identity through brand poetry and professional narration. The business sits at a strange and beautiful intersection. She’s part journalist, part biographer, part poet, and entirely a translator. Her specialty is taking the things people struggle to put into words about themselves and giving them back as language they can finally use.
It’s the kind of work AI genuinely can’t do, not in the way that matters. And after 20 years of writing, journalism, and listening to people tell their stories, Abby has a deep, well-earned conviction about why.
Abby is originally from Colorado Springs and has called the Charleston area home for 21 years. Her career started in music journalism, which took her across the United States and even to Hong Kong, where she spent more than a decade shadowing musicians and the industry that surrounded them.
What she noticed during those years became the seed of everything that came after. Musicians labored to be heard correctly, editors and labels often wanted a certain tone that flattened the individual, and many artists, brilliant at their craft, lacked the administrative tools to manage themselves. Abby saw the gap clearly.
In 2016, she launched VeraNation as a music blog. A platform for artists to be heard on their own terms, paired with a DIY marketing and management package for independent musicians. Many of those early artists still keep in touch. She was introduced as a writer, but she knew no one would take her seriously with just a blog. So she asked herself the question that would reshape the business. What problems could I solve for businesses equal to my creatives? The answer became the next chapter.

By 2021, VeraNation had evolved. Abby began offering professional biographies and editing, profiling the person behind a brand, business, or craft and visualizing who they were and what they stood for. She excelled with clients who struggled to interpret what they wished to convey, especially international clients working in English as a second or third language. The biographies weren’t just for social media. They were used for grant writing, school applications, presentations, and websites.
Then in May 2022, poetry became the missing piece. Spoken word, creative release, the kind of language that turns trauma and triumph into something other people can hear. Abby leaned into it and the response was immediate. Self-publishing followed, then community-pillar status, then speaking engagements.
What Abby figured out is that storytelling, on its own, isn’t a selling point. How the story is told is everything.

“If people don’t know you, they don’t know your business. AI can’t do that.”
That sentence is the cornerstone of VeraNation. Anyone can generate copy, but only a human paying close attention can find the line that captures who you actually are.
The clients who connect with Abby are the ones who get the magic — people who are afraid of a blank page, who don’t know how to put into words what they wish to convey, and who aren’t afraid to be adventurous with a little poetic marketing. The kind who knows they have a story but can’t quite see it yet, who are willing to try language that isn’t safe and predictable, and who believe a brand should sound like a real person rather than a corporate template. When Abby finds those clients, the work sings.
Abby’s life outside work is a study in curiosity. She travels constantly, drinks every kind of tea she can get her hands on, cooks, spends time with her cat, and finds time for language study and gymnastics. She lives like someone who knows the world is bigger than any single chapter.
And the fun fact most people would never guess? Abby has visited and studied North Korea. The kind of travel that most writers only dream about, the kind that gives a person something to draw on for the rest of their career. It’s a perfect detail for someone whose work is fundamentally about understanding people on the other side of cultural and linguistic distances.

“Through prayer and by these examples, I’m no longer afraid to be open to my faults and the failures that have led to the successful life I’m living now.”
That openness shapes how she shows up in the world today. And whenever she’s asked to represent her community through poetry or nonprofit work, she thinks of her father, who was a pastor and showed her how much more was preached by what he did than by what he said.
When Abby talks about why she chose Charleston Business Exchange, the answer is rooted in faith too. Ashley, whom Abby met through Bryan, was one of the first people in the Charleston networking world who also wanted a better space, and who simply wanted to get to know her first. That kind of opening is rare, and it set the tone for everything that came next.
From the first meeting Abby attended, she knew she could be herself, learn, and grow. The noon meeting time was a major bonus over the 8 a.m. networking circuit, but the deeper reason she stayed is more philosophical. CBX is an excellent bridge across areas of interest, encouraging members to talk to each other instead of trading cards. Everyone has a seat at the table, and everyone is valued.
Her favorite part so far is meeting everyone and feeling of value. For Abby, community in business is the foundation of everything. To be successful takes a community, and even if you’re not the right fit for everyone, you always know someone you can connect with.
If you’re a business owner, creative, or professional who has been struggling to put your story into words, an international client whose voice deserves to be heard clearly in English, or anyone who knows they have something to say but doesn’t know how to say it, Abby and VeraNation Writing are ready to help. Real listening, real poetry, and the kind of brand voice that finally sounds like you.
