If you’ve ever tried to read a medical record, you know how impossible it can feel. It’s page after page of dense notes, abbreviations, and clinical shorthand that don’t mean much unless you’ve been trained to read them. For an attorney, though, that record is often the whole case, and the detail that changes everything might be buried somewhere on page 840.
Shannon Hurst reads those records for a living. She’s a registered nurse who now runs Scopes & Standards, where she works with attorneys and healthcare organizations to figure out what a medical record is actually saying. She’ll go through it, flag what matters, and explain in plain language what happened to the patient and what it means for the case. She also handles patient safety analysis and clinical education, and she works with clients all over the country.
She’s been a nurse for 18 years, and that’s really the heart of it. She knows what good care looks like, and she knows what it looks like when something goes wrong. She also isn’t interested in shading the story in either direction.
Shannon grew up in Las Vegas and moved to the Charleston area about three years ago. All those years in nursing and patient safety gave her something a lot of people never develop: the ability to look at care and judge it honestly, without quietly rooting for one side.
“My career in nursing and patient safety taught me the importance of evaluating healthcare objectively. When care falls short due to system breakdowns, those issues should be identified. Equally important, when care aligns with standards and appropriate practices, that truth deserves to be brought to light as well.”
If Shannon could get one point across to attorneys, it’s that a lot of the early work that usually goes straight to a medical expert can be done by a nurse first, and done well. Nurses spend their whole careers sizing up situations fast, spotting risk, and noticing when something’s off. That’s exactly the instinct record review calls for.
It also saves real money. Shannon can go through a stack of records and tell an attorney, often within a few hours, whether there’s a case there, what the key medical questions are, and where a deposition should focus. Sending that same review to a medical expert can take weeks and run well into five figures. She’s the first pass that helps an attorney figure out where the expert budget is actually worth spending, and where it isn’t.
She tends to click best with attorneys who communicate clearly and want to work as partners. When a relationship runs that way, she can move quickly and hand back work they can really lean on.
When she’s not buried in a chart, Shannon is usually with her family, baking something, or out exploring the East Coast, and she travels whenever the schedule lets her. She’s pretty deliberate about her time off, the same way she is about her work.
Here’s something you’d never guess: she used to ride a motorcycle. Honestly, it fits. The things that keep a rider out of trouble, like paying attention, staying calm, and taking in everything at once, are the same things that make her good at reading a case.
Her family shaped a lot of this. Her dad ran his own business and led with integrity and dependability, and that’s basically how she runs Scopes & Standards now. Early on in her nursing career, a mentor told her that the field can take you in all kinds of directions but your foundation is what matters, and that’s stuck with her ever since.
For Shannon, faith is the foundation, and it shows up in how she works.
“My faith influences me to approach life and business with honesty, compassion, and a strong sense of responsibility. It helps guide my decisions, my interactions with others, and my commitment to doing the right thing, even when it’s not the easiest path.”
You can see it most in how she handles a case. There’s always pressure in this work to tell a client what they’re hoping to hear, and she won’t do it. Being straight with people, even when the honest answer isn’t the one they wanted, is really the whole point of what she does.
When Shannon talks about why she joined Charleston Business Exchange, it comes back to the feeling in the room: everyone there just gets it. They’re all business owners trying to juggle real life on top of running something. She likes the structure, she likes that people actually want to see each other do well, and she likes that CBX keeps her learning. It also helps that it’s a nonprofit that puts money back into the community.
That last part matters to her. CBX gives its dues to a charity the group picks each year, so being a member means being part of something bigger than your own business. For someone whose whole job is about doing right by people, that lined up easily.
